I've been taking some old 19th century books that have been scanned and cleaning them up in PDF format. I have Acrobat Pro 11 and Photoshop CS5. My problem is that, as an example, an original page has a file size of 833KB but after cleaning it up it expands to 3MB. I've reduced the quality from Maximum to Low, and that helps with the file size, but, the overall text quality is less than what I started with. How do I keep the same text quality and file size?

Since you are using CS5 I'm assuming you are working with a tif, psd or jpg format. If the image is color you might try saving as a grayscale or b&w file. If you are already doing that, then I'm done.
